Introduction
A clear guide for Grade 12 students and parents explaining the difference between the English Aptitude Test and IELTS Academic, when one test is enough, when a student may need both, and how Kuwait University, Abdullah Al Salem University and the Ministry of Higher Education use each result. It covers majors, weights, IELTS-to-aptitude conversion, medicine and engineering, annual and merit scholarships, the correct IELTS type, fees, results, validity and preparation. Its purpose is to prevent students from booking a test that does not serve their goal or discovering a language condition after an admission deadline.
English Aptitude Test vs IELTS in Kuwait University Scholarship and Major Requirements
A student and parent guide to choosing the right test for the intended major and institution
The English Aptitude Test and IELTS both assess English, but they do not serve the same purpose. The English Aptitude Test is a local national test used in an equivalent admission score or for placement, while IELTS Academic is international proof of listening, reading, writing and speaking for university admission, scholarships and overseas study. This guide identifies when one test is enough, when both may be needed and which option fits each university, major and study plan.
1. The real difference between the English Aptitude Test and IELTS
The first supports a local equivalent score while the second proves readiness to study in English
Do not choose by reputation or perceived difficulty. Begin with the institution receiving the score: a Kuwaiti university, the annual scholarship plan, the Merit Scholarship Programme or an overseas university. That institution decides whether it needs a score out of 100, an IELTS band out of 9 or both.
What is the English Aptitude Test?
Its official name is the Academic Aptitude Test in English. It is part of the National Unified Test administered by Kuwait University. The result is out of 100 and is used by Kuwait University and Abdullah Al Salem University in the equivalent score for selected colleges. The National Test also contributes to competition for selected medicine and engineering places in domestic and overseas scholarships.
What is IELTS Academic?
IELTS Academic is an international test of four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Scores range from 0 to 9, with one band for every skill and an Overall band. An undergraduate or postgraduate applicant normally needs IELTS Academic, not General Training. A university or scholarship body may require both an overall score and a minimum in every skill.
Are the two tests the same?
No. The English Aptitude Test is shorter and focuses on Grammar, Vocabulary and Reading. It has no Speaking, Writing or Listening section. IELTS assesses the full set of language skills needed for university study, so strength in one test does not automatically produce the same result in the other.
Can IELTS replace the English Aptitude Test?
Kuwait University allows IELTS or TOEFL to replace the English Aptitude Test in the equivalent-score calculation when the result is submitted before the admission application closes. Abdullah Al Salem University also accepts IELTS or TOEFL in place of National English and uses the highest available English result. This substitution covers English only; it does not remove Mathematics, Arabic, an interview or the school-percentage requirement.
Can a student need both?
Yes. A medicine or engineering scholarship applicant may need the National Test for the equivalent score and IELTS for the Ministry and the overseas university. An Abdullah Al Salem University medicine applicant needs IELTS 6.5 in every skill for eligibility and may also take National English if a stronger local score could improve the equivalent score after conversion.
Which test is easier?
There is no universal answer. English Aptitude is shorter and mostly multiple choice, but it is fast and allows less than a minute per item. IELTS is longer and includes writing, speaking and listening, but it may suit a student with balanced language skills. The right test is the one that satisfies the actual condition, not the one a friend found easier.
2. When each test is needed for a university major or scholarship
Start with the final goal and then set the test score and deadline
A student does not need every available English test. The student needs the result that genuinely enters the admission decision, with time to retake before the university or scholarship closes. The cases below bring the current rules together in one place.
The annual overseas scholarship plan
The equivalent score is used to rank medicine and engineering applicants, so these students should prepare the National Test early, especially English and Mathematics. After scholarship acceptance, the student also needs the IELTS Academic score required by the university and major. The current general floor is 5.5 Overall and 5.5 in every skill, or TOEFL 47. If the university requires 6, 6.5 or 7, the higher condition applies.
Does passing English Aptitude satisfy the scholarship language condition?
No. Aptitude supports the local equivalent score but does not automatically become an IELTS certificate for the Ministry or an overseas university. A medicine or engineering applicant may pass English Aptitude and still have an outstanding IELTS Academic condition.
The Merit Scholarship Programme
The Kuwaiti National Test is not a separate general condition for the 2026–2027 Merit Scholarship Programme. The programme instead requires an appropriate final academic offer, the applicable distinguished list and the programme and language conditions. The general language condition is the IELTS Academic score required by the university, with a minimum of 5.5 Overall and 5.5 in every skill, or TOEFL 47. A higher university requirement overrides the minimum. National English remains useful only when the student is preserving Kuwait University or the annual plan as a backup.
Self-funded overseas study
An overseas university does not normally use Kuwait's English Aptitude score in place of its language condition. The student usually needs IELTS Academic or another test accepted by the university. Some universities issue a language-conditional offer, while others require the score before a final offer. A student keeping a Kuwaiti backup should maintain a separate aptitude plan before the year's attempts end.
3. Scores conversion and what each institution actually uses
Never compare an IELTS band out of 9 with a score out of 100 before conversion
Kuwait University and Abdullah Al Salem University do not insert the raw IELTS band into the equivalent score. It is first converted to an aptitude percentage and then multiplied by the college English weight. The Ministry and an overseas university instead examine the Overall and each skill against their language condition.
IELTS to English Aptitude conversion
The current Kuwait University conversion is:
· IELTS 0 to 2 converts progressively to 0, 10, 15 and 20 in English Aptitude.
· IELTS 2.5 = 23, 3 = 28, 3.5 = 35 and 4 = 43.
· IELTS 4.5 = 50, 5 = 60 and 5.5 = 66.
· IELTS 6 = 73, 6.5 = 81, 7 = 89 and 7.5 = 96.
· IELTS 8, 8.5 or 9 = 100 in English Aptitude.
The key example is that IELTS 5 does not become 50; it converts to 60. IELTS 6.5 converts to 81. Only after conversion is the result multiplied by the college English weight.
How do I identify the stronger result?
Compare National English out of 100 with the converted IELTS score. If National English is 84 and IELTS is 6.5, National English is higher than 81 and helps the equivalent score more. If National English is 70 and IELTS is 6.5, IELTS is higher after conversion. Abdullah Al Salem University's calculator automatically displays the highest result.
Is the Overall band enough?
The local conversion uses the IELTS result under the conversion schedule, but scholarships and overseas universities may require minimum scores in every skill. The Ministry's current general condition is 5.5 Overall and in every skill, while Abdullah Al Salem medicine requires 6.5 in every skill. A suitable Overall band can therefore hide a Writing or Speaking score below the requirement.
What if the university requires more than the Ministry?
The higher score applies. The Ministry floor allows the student to satisfy its minimum condition; it does not promise that a university will admit the applicant. Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Physiotherapy and other programmes may require 6.5 or 7 and specific skill minimums, depending on the university and programme.
Is IELTS General Training valid for university and scholarship admission?
IELTS Academic is the correct choice for degree-level study. General Training is mainly for migration, work or below-degree study and should not replace Academic merely because both use band scores. For UK study, do not book IELTS for UKVI automatically; the UKVI version is needed only when the offer or the specific visa route requires it.
Can One Skill Retake solve one low component?
IELTS One Skill Retake permits one eligible Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking retake within 60 days of a qualifying computer-delivered test and produces a new report. Not every university or funding body accepts it, so Acceptix should verify the receiving policy before the student relies on it instead of repeating the full test.
4. Test format cost results and a realistic preparation plan
Different skills and timings require different preparation
English Aptitude rewards fast Grammar, Vocabulary and Reading decisions. IELTS requires balanced performance across four skills. A useful plan begins with a diagnostic model for every required test and then assigns time according to the weakest skill and the real deadline.
Inside the English Aptitude Test
· 85 questions in 60 minutes: 35 Grammar, 35 Vocabulary and 15 Reading Comprehension.
· The score is out of 100. The published general English pass score is 60, but a competitive target varies by college.
· The current fee is KWD 10 for each aptitude subject, paid through KNET.
· A student may take the test up to three times in an academic year, and the highest valid subject score is used.
· The score remains valid for two years, is normally released within two weeks and can be appealed within one week of publication.
Effective preparation is not answer memorisation. Train to identify the rule quickly, understand vocabulary in context and locate the main idea, details and inference in a passage. With less than one minute per item on average, record your time in every model and identify where minutes are being lost.
Inside IELTS Academic
· Total testing time is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes.
· Listening is approximately 30 minutes, Reading 60 minutes, Writing 60 minutes and Speaking 11 to 14 minutes.
· Every skill receives a band from 0 to 9. The Overall is the average of the four skill scores, rounded under IELTS rules.
· Computer-delivered results in Kuwait are currently released in 1 to 5 days and are normally valid for two years.
· The current IELTS Academic fee at the official IDP IELTS centre in Kuwait is KWD 106 at the review date.
Academic Writing includes a visual-information description in Task 1 and an essay in Task 2. Speaking is a three-part conversation with an examiner. Grammar knowledge alone is therefore insufficient, even for a student with a high English Aptitude result.
When should each test begin?
· Kuwait University or Abdullah Al Salem University only: begin National English in Grade 12 to preserve more than one attempt before admission.
· Medicine or engineering scholarship: prepare English Aptitude and IELTS in parallel rather than waiting for the scholarship result.
· Merit Scholarship or overseas admission: begin IELTS first because the final offer may depend on it; add aptitude only when a local backup is needed.
· Do not take IELTS far too early without a plan because its normal validity is two years. Do not leave it to the final week because a full or one-skill retake may be needed.
Mistakes that delay admission despite having an English score
· Booking IELTS General Training instead of Academic.
· Looking only at the Overall and missing a minimum in every skill.
· Submitting IELTS after the local university application period, so it cannot enter the equivalent score.
· Assuming IELTS removes Mathematics, Arabic or the MMI.
· Putting the raw IELTS band into the university formula instead of the converted score out of 100.
· Treating 60 in aptitude or 5.5 in IELTS as the final target for a competitive major when the university requires more.
· Booking One Skill Retake without confirming that the university and funding body accept the new report.
5. How Acceptix identifies the right test and prepares the admission plan
Goal diagnosis score planning training and an admission timeline
We do not begin by asking which test the student prefers. We begin with the major, university and scholarship type, then turn the conditions into a clear list: the required test, target score, final deadline and backup. This makes every study hour and booking fee part of a real admission step.
Before booking
· A free academic consultation to identify the major, university and scholarship or self-funded route.
· A decision on English Aptitude, IELTS Academic or both, including whether UKVI is actually required.
· Several equivalent-score scenarios to identify the score that materially changes the intended major's chances.
· A review of the Overall and every skill requirement instead of relying on a broad label such as IELTS 6.5.
· A timeline connecting aptitude attempts, IELTS dates, university admission and scholarship deadlines.
English Aptitude and IELTS workshops
· A level assessment before training rather than placing every student in one general plan.
· English Aptitude workshops covering Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading and management of 85 questions in 60 minutes.
· IELTS preparation across Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, with a separate target for every skill.
· Timed models, error analysis and an improvement plan between the first attempt and a retake.
· Guidance on a full retake or One Skill Retake when the receiving institution accepts it.
After results
· IELTS conversion to an aptitude percentage and comparison of both results for the equivalent score.
· A review of eligibility for Kuwait University, Abdullah Al Salem University and scholarships by major.
· Selection of overseas universities compatible with the current language score or a plan to reach the higher requirement.
· University applications, document preparation and follow-up from a conditional offer to final admission.
· Support with attestation, scholarship steps, visa, accommodation and airport pickup for overseas study.
A quick choice for each situation
· Kuwait University only: English Aptitude first, with IELTS as an alternative when its converted score is higher or it serves another route.
· Abdullah Al Salem business or engineering: National English or IELTS, with Mathematics still required.
· Abdullah Al Salem medicine: IELTS 6.5 in every skill, Mathematics and the MMI; National English is optional for competition when it converts higher.
· Annual medicine or engineering scholarship: the National Test for ranking and IELTS Academic for the language and overseas admission condition.
· Merit Scholarship: IELTS Academic and final admission first; aptitude only for a local or annual-plan backup.
· Self-funded overseas study: IELTS according to the university; aptitude only when a Kuwaiti option remains in the plan.
Official registration, accurate data, payment and attendance remain the student's responsibility. The university or competent body makes the admission or scholarship decision. Acceptix defines the route, trains the student, calculates the score effect and prepares the university application, but cannot guarantee a score, place or scholarship decision.
Begin before the first attempt, not after the result. Book an academic assessment and language workshop early so that every test serves the intended major and every target score has a clear purpose.
