1. The UK Is Moving Toward Digital Visas
The UK is continuing its shift toward digital immigration status, known as an eVisa.
Instead of relying only on physical documents, many students can now access and prove their immigration status through an online UKVI account.
For students, this means it is important to check your email carefully after receiving a visa decision, set up or access your UKVI account, and make sure your passport details are updated before travelling.
This digital process is designed to make it easier to prove your right to study, work, rent, or travel, but students should keep their login details safe and regularly check that their information is correct.
2. Financial Requirements for the UK Student Visa
One of the most important parts of a UK Student visa application is proving that you have enough money to cover your tuition fees and living costs.
According to the UK Government, students must show they can cover their course fees, as listed on their CAS, as well as living costs. The current living-cost requirement is £1,529 per month for courses in London and £1,171 per month for courses outside London, for up to 9 months.
Study Location | Monthly Living Cost Requirement | Maximum Calculation Period |
London | £1,529 per month | Up to 9 months |
Outside London | £1,171 per month | Up to 9 months |
This means students may need to show up to £13,761 for living costs in London or up to £10,539 outside London, in addition to the required tuition fee amount.
3. UK Student Visa Application Fee
The current UK Student visa application fee is £524. This fee applies to the main student applicant and also to each dependant, if dependants are eligible to apply.
Students should also consider the Immigration Health Surcharge, which is usually paid as part of the visa process and gives access to the UK’s National Health Service during the visa period.
4. Dependant Rules for International Students
The UK has tightened the rules around which students can bring family members as dependants.
According to the UK Government, dependants may be able to join or stay with a student if the student is government-sponsored and studying a course longer than 6 months, or if the student is on an eligible full-time postgraduate course. For postgraduate courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, the course generally must be a PhD, doctorate, or other research-based higher degree.
Dependants also need to meet separate financial requirements. Current guidance lists £845 per month for each dependant in London and £680 per month outside London, for up to 9 months.
Study Location | Required Funds per Dependant |
London | £845 per month, up to 9 months |
Outside London | £680 per month, up to 9 months |
If you are planning to study in the UK with your family, it is important to check your eligibility early and prepare the financial documents before submitting the visa application.
5. Graduate Visa and Post-Study Work Opportunities
The UK Graduate Visa allows eligible international students to stay in the UK after successfully completing an eligible course.
The UK Government currently states that the Graduate Visa lasts 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027, and 3 years for PhD or other doctoral qualification holders.
Qualification / Application Date | Graduate Visa Duration |
Bachelor’s or Master’s, application made on or before 31 December 2026 | 2 years |
Bachelor’s or Master’s, application made on or after 1 January 2027 | 18 months |
PhD or other doctoral qualification | 3 years |
The Graduate Visa cannot be extended directly, but students may be able to switch to another visa route if they meet the requirements, such as the Skilled Worker Visa.
What These Updates Mean for Students
The UK remains a strong destination for international education, but the updated visa rules make planning more important than ever.
Before applying, students should consider:
whether the course and university are eligible for the Student visa
the total tuition fees and living costs
whether they meet the financial requirements
whether they need to bring dependants
the city they plan to live in and its cost of living
their post-study plans after graduation
Choosing a university is no longer only about ranking. It is also about the right course, location, cost, visa eligibility, and long-term career direction.
